When one is part of the majority group, one rarely thinks about the fact that members of minority groups have different experiences in the same context. Ignorance of the problems of these groups makes people who are not from them think that there is nothing they can do to help them. In fact, the opposite is true. When someone who is not part of the group stands alongside and publicly shows their support, it sends a strong message.
Allies
Allyship involves individuals actively advocating for the interests and inclusion of marginalized and under-represented groups. An ally is often defined as someone who is not a member of a marginalized group but is willing to take action to support and help that group.
Such actions can be participation in events organized by representatives of the group, which shows interest in their issues and problems. Public expressions of support show that the issues are important to everyone, not just within the minority group. Talking about these issues also leads to solutions to the problems.
Starting a conversation
Creating a safe place to talk about the issues of people who are not part of the dominant group is also a form of support. Having frequent conversations normalizes diversity topics for both the teller and the listener.
There are many topics that one simply does not understand. Ignorance comes from not knowing enough people from marginalized groups or being embarrassed to ask. It is the asking of questions that contributes to increased understanding of topics and acceptance of differences. .
Respect
If one does not understand, it is better to ask questions than to assume. When asking questions, members of minority groups should not answer him/her sarcastically or half-heartedly. A better strategy is to answer politely and to make an effort to familiarize oneself with the topic and increase knowledge.
To support members of marginalized groups, one should first and foremost show them respect and deference. After showing interest and finding out more about their problems, one should not behave differently afterwards.
One should not make comments or jokes that may make someone feel uncomfortable, as these are microaggressions. Using inclusive, inclusive and accessible language demonstrates respect for people and promotes equality in communication.
