Constant learning is a necessary skill for one to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Getting outside of the comfort zone at the workplace contributes to new challenges, which in turn provide opportunities for new knowledge.
The reasons for taking steps outside of normal duties vary. They may be related to a feeling of dissatisfaction in the current workplace or a need for a change. People think that in order to make a change, it is necessary to take a big and bold step. However, this is very stressful, even frightening, and can lead to a sense of being stuck in one place.
The small steps
Small changes can eventually lead to the significant transformations a person wants for their career. Instead of focusing solely on landing a dream job right away, one should consider breaking down their career ambitions into manageable steps. Taking a patient and strategic approach can slowly allow a career to change over the long run.
The change
It may be possible to change roles within the same organization, or to take up a role in another organization within the same industry or geographic area, or to relocate, while the core job responsibilities remain the same .
When changing roles within the same organization, one may try to volunteer for tasks or projects outside of their current job description. By gaining experience and skills in the areas of interest, an attempt can be made to change the role to one that is more interesting or appropriate.
Seeking promotion when changing the organization is not a mandatory condition. For starters, one can apply for a similar position and gain knowledge and contacts within the company before getting a promotion opportunity.
When changing sector, one is more likely to start in a lower position. The advantage of this, however, is the opportunity to learn more about the industry, create a network of contacts and gain relevant experience in the sector. One can then use this experience to apply for better jobs in that sector until eventually landing their dream job.
If none of these are real possible, and the need for change is significant, there are other strategies one can try. In case one does not find satisfaction at work, a person can participate in new activities that give them energy. While people often think this means enrolling in a course or volunteering for a cause, it can be even simpler than that. Listening to a podcast on a topic of interest or reading a book on the way to work is a small step towards change.
