Circular economy startups raised $628 million in 12 months

Investors are becoming more selective, not less

The funding environment for startups has changed over the past two years. Capital is no longer flowing easily across every sustainability idea. Investors are asking tougher questions, expecting clearer business models and looking much closer at profitability. Despite this, circular economy startups continue to attract significant investment.

According to publicly disclosed funding rounds between August 2025 and July 2026, startups working in the circular economy raised more than $628 million across 24 equity deals. The figure confirms that investors remain interested in businesses that recover materials, extend product lifecycles and reduce dependence on virgin resources.

Bigger rounds are shaping the market

The numbers also tell another story. More than half of the disclosed funding came from a single company. Battery recycling specialist Redwood Materials raised $350 million during the period, representing almost 56 percent of the total capital invested. Without that round, total disclosed funding falls to just over $200 million. This highlights an important shift in investor behaviour.

Large investors are concentrating capital in companies that already have proven technology, industrial partnerships and a clear path to commercial scale. The market is rewarding execution rather than ambitious concepts alone.

Recycling remains the strongest investment theme

Battery recycling continues to dominate investment activity, driven by growing demand for critical raw materials needed for electric vehicles and energy storage.

At the same time, investors are increasing their attention on textile recycling, plastic recovery, electronic waste and industrial material recovery. These sectors are becoming increasingly important as manufacturers search for stable sources of recycled materials and governments introduce stricter circularity targets. Artificial intelligence is also becoming part of the conversation.

Companies developing technologies that improve waste sorting, material tracking and recycling efficiency are attracting new investment as digital tools become essential for modern recycling infrastructure.

The next challenge is industrial scale

Raising investment is only one part of the journey. Many circular economy startups have already demonstrated that their technologies work in pilot projects. The next step is building industrial capacity that can compete with traditional supply chains on cost, quality and reliability.

This requires long-term customers, manufacturing partnerships and consistent access to feedstock. Without these elements, even well-funded companies struggle to move beyond demonstration scale.

What founders should learn from the data?

The latest funding figures show that the circular economy remains an attractive investment area, but expectations have changed.

Investors are looking for companies that solve real industrial problems, operate within existing supply chains and can demonstrate measurable commercial demand. Circularity alone is no longer enough.

For founders, the opportunity is still there. The difference is that success will depend less on explaining why circular economy matters and more on proving that circular business models can compete on performance, economics and scale.
