Global Methane Hub announced an investment of 30 million dollars in a new international program called Circular Economy NOW!. The project focuses on reducing methane emissions through more efficient management of organic waste. The information was published officially by the organization in November 2025.
The program has a clear focus. It supports cities and communities that want to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills. The emphasis is on local solutions such as separate collection, composting, reuse of food resources and reducing food loss.
The idea is simple. When less organic waste goes underground, less methane is released. Methane warms the atmosphere much more strongly than carbon dioxide.
Why methane?
According to data cited by Global Methane Hub, methane is responsible for about one third of current global warming. A significant part of it comes from food waste. When food breaks down without air in landfills, it releases methane. Waste management in many cities is poorly structured, especially in large urban areas and in regions with limited resources.
The funding will be directed to local governments, non-governmental organizations and community groups in different countries. Projects may include building composting systems, developing infrastructure for processing organic waste and conducting educational campaigns.
The program will not focus only on the environmental effect. It also aims to create new economic opportunities. Many local circular economy initiatives generate jobs, reduce waste management costs and provide new raw materials for agriculture and business.
The social dimension
Circular Economy NOW! also includes a social element. Part of the funds will support communities that already work in the waste sector but do so without enough support or protection. In some regions people who collect or process waste are part of the informal economy. The new initiative aims to improve their conditions and structure the system so that it becomes more sustainable and fair.
The Global Methane Hub investment is one of the most significant international steps toward reducing methane through a circular approach. It shows a change in the way the world views waste. It is no longer seen only as a problem. It is a resource that can be returned to the economy. And the more communities adopt this approach, the lower the emissions and the costs will be.
