The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become one of the biggest demonstrations yet that recycled textile materials are moving from pilot projects into mainstream sportswear.
Around three quarters of national team kits at the tournament contain recycled polyester derived from textile waste, according to industry data. The number is significant because the material is being used in one of the most demanding clothing categories in the world.
Football kits need to be lightweight, breathable and durable. They need to perform under heat, humidity and intense physical activity. For the world’s biggest sportswear brands, this is a serious test.
Nike puts textile waste directly into elite performance wear
Nike’s 2026 federation collections are its first elite performance apparel made from 100% textile waste.
The company uses advanced chemical recycling to convert textile waste into recycled polyester yarn designed to perform like virgin material. The technology is integrated into its Aero-FIT performance system, which uses different knitting structures to improve airflow and cooling.
Nike is supplying kits for 16 national teams at the tournament, including Brazil, France, England, the United States and Canada. The company says its new material delivers more than twice the airflow of previous fabrics. The kits were tested in thermal chambers, on football pitches and through motion-capture systems before the tournament. The message from Nike is clear: recycled feedstock needs to meet the same performance requirements as conventional materials.
Puma is building a different recycling model
Puma is using its Re programme across its football products. The company says at least 95% of the polyester used in the kits of 11 national teams comes from old clothing, unsold stock, manufacturing offcuts and textile scraps. The same approach is used in fan replica jerseys. Puma has also set a target for 30% of its recycled polyester to come from textile-to-textile sources by 2030. That target matters because the biggest challenge for textile recycling is not only technology. It is in demand.
Adidas brings recycled textile inputs to the World Cup
Adidas is supplying kits for 14 national teams, including Argentina, Spain and Mexico. Its 2026 World Cup collections include recycled polyester derived from textile waste, integrated into its Climacool technologies. The company is also targeting a 10% share of recycled textile inputs across its global product portfolio by 2030. The numbers across the three brands point to a wider shift.
For years, textile-to-textile recycling has struggled with the same problem as many circular economy technologies. The technology can exist, but without stable demand, large-scale investment in collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure remains difficult. Major sportswear contracts can change that equation.
Large, predictable orders create a market for recycled feedstock. They give recyclers a reason to invest in capacity. They also give brands a reason to develop products around materials that were previously treated as waste.
The World Cup has therefore become more than a showcase for new football kits. It is a commercial test for whether textile waste can become an industrial raw material again. The next question is whether the infrastructure can scale fast enough to supply the demand now being created. Because once recycled textile materials are accepted by the world’s best athletes, the conversation changes. The industry now has to answer a much harder question: how quickly can this move from the football pitch into the rest of the clothing market?
